1. Lohri: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Lohri, one of the popular festivals of India dates on 13th January, Friday in 2024. Lohri falls on the last day of the month of Paush, also known as Makar Sankranti in most places.

Where: Lohri marks the harvesting season in Punjab and the end of the winter season.

Significance: Lohri, one of the popular Punjabi festivals of India, is celebrated by lighting a huge bonfire in the yard after the rabi crops are chopped. Small idols of the Lohri goddess are made and placed beneath the fire.

Things to do: People wear traditional clothes and throw sesame seeds, jaggery, and rewaries in the fire. They sit around the fire and sing and dance till the fire dies out. People also pray to God of fire, to bless their land with abundance and prosperity. They also exchange greetings and gifts with their friends and family members.

2. Pongal: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Pongal, one of the popular festivals of South India (celebrated as Makar Sankranti in North India) dates from January 13-16. The main festivities occur on January 14, Saturday

Where: Tamil Nadu

Significance: Pongal is a popular harvest festival is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. 

Things to do: The three days of the Pongal festival are called Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, and Maattu Pongal. On the main Pongal day, people gather to cook Pongal dishes facing east towards the rising sun and then offered to God.

Republic day 2021

3. Republic Day: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Republic Day has been celebrated every year in India on January 26.

Where: January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day all across India with a lot of enthusiasm.

Significance: It is celebrated to honor the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect or being.

Things to do: In Delhi, at Rajpath magnificent parades are held by the regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, police, and paramilitary forces.

Republic day Facts: Even after India became independent in 1947, it still didn’t have a permanent constitution, and Indian laws were based on a modified version of the British established, Government of India Act 1935. Later, Dr. B R Ambedkar was appointed to draft the Indian Constitution. After a lot of hard work, the Constitution was finally drafted, and January 26 was chosen as the day to declare India as the Sovereign Republic. India’s constitution happened on Republic Day, 26th January 1950.

11. Eid-Ul-Fitr: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Ramazan Eid, one of the popular festivals of India dates on 22nd April, Saturday in 2024.

Where: World- wide

Significance: Ramazan Eid marks the end of, the fasting month by the Muslims; when they do not eat or drink anything during the day. They only eat after the evening prayers are done and after the sun sets and the moon reappears. The last day of the Ramadan month, Eid- ul –Fitar is celebrated by everyone which marks the end of the fasting season and the start of the Islamic month of ‘Shawwal’.

Things to do: Ramzan Eid or the Eid-Ul-Fitr is celebrated on the last day of the holy month when the Muslims break their fast and celebrate the festival with foods, gifts and wish each other ‘Eid Mubarak’.

17. Independence Day: Indian Festivals 2024

When: In 2024, Independence Day, 15th August falls on a Tuesday.

Where: India

Significance: Indian Independence Day is celebrated on August 15 every year to commemorate India’s freedom from the rule of the British Raj in 1947. it is an annual celebratory occasion and a national holiday.

Things to do: People hoist the national flag, wear colors signifying the tricolor, take part in many cultural programs and parades to celebrate the day.

Independence Day Facts: On 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of independent India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the national flag at the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in New Delhi, and the Father of the Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi fasted in Calcutta.

The day is recognized as the national pride and honor for our country, with subsequent Prime Ministers hoisting the flag and addressing the country from the Red Fort every year.

18. Onam: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Onam, one of the popular Indian festivals (South) dates on 29th August, Tuesday, 2024. The festival begins on the day known as Atham and ends on the tenth day, known as Thiru Onam or Thiruvonam. 

Where: The festival of Onam is celebrated throughout the state of Kerala.

Significance: Onam festival has its roots grounded in mythology. Once upon a time, there was a generous and virtuous ruler, Mahabali who ruled Kerala. Though he was an asura – enemies of devas. So, the devas sent Lord Vishnu in the disguise of Vamana (a dwarf). Vamana requested Mahabali for three feet of land as an offering.

And at the time of measuring the three feet of land, Vamana grew so huge that he measured all the worlds in two steps. Since he had nowhere else to place his third step, Mahabali asked Vamana to place it on him. Vamana was pleased by the generosity of the king and blessed Mahabali before he was sent to the nether world. He granted him permission to visit people once a year. And the visit of Mahabali is celebrated as Onam.

Things to do: People purchase and wearing of new clothing, known as the Onakkodi, lamps are beautifully decorated, people also indulge in various games and dances during and post-Thiruvonam.

19. Raksha Bandhan: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Raksha Bandhan dates on 30th August, Wednesday in 2024.

Where: Rakhsha Bandhan is one of the auspicious festivals of India. 

Significance: The word Raksha means ‘safety’ and  Bandhan means ‘bond’. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of the lovable and bond that exists between siblings. Raksha Bandhan is rooted in mythology. It is said that during Mahabharat, when Lord Krishna accidentally nicked his finger on his ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree and tied it to his finger to stop the bleeding. Lord Krishna was so touched by her gesture and kindness that he promised to always protect her.

Things to do: On this day sisters tie Rakhi, a protective band on their brother’s hand that ensures the safety of the brother. In return,  the brother promises her the same.

Significance: Lord Krishna is believed to have been born on this day. 

Things to do: Celebrations start from midnight, people fast on this day and sing devotional songs. As a part of the ritual, statues of baby Krishna are washed and placed for worship. People then break their fast and share food and sweets. Dahi handi competitions are also organized on this day.

21. Ganesh Chaturthi: Indian Festivals 2024

When: This popular Indian festivals dates on 19th September, Tuesday in 2024.

Where: Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm throughout India. But celebrations in  Maharashtra is somewhat special.

Significance: Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Ganesha.

Things to do:  This is a 10-day long festival that  begins weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, with people making clay idols of Lord Ganesha and painting them. On the tenth day, Lord Ganesha’s statue is immersed in water, known as Ganpati Visarjan. People chant Ganapati Bappa Morya, paying respect to him.

22. Gandhi Jayanti: Indian Festivals 2024

When: Gandhi ji was born on 2nd October . 

Where: Gandhi Jayanti is observed throughout the India. 

Significance: Mahatma Gandhi was born on the 2nd of October in Gujarat, Porbandar.

About Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi :  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also well-known as Mahatma Gandhi  heavily contributed to India’s Independence movement. Not only did Gandhi just contributed to India’s freedom struggle but also stood up to bring changes in society. He believed in the path of “Ahimsa” and thus his birthday is celebrated to remember his principle of non-violence and to secure peace, tolerance in the nation. Mahatma Gandhi is the greatest and famous Indian personality and for his contributions to the Indian independence struggle, he earned the title of “Father of the nation”.

23. Navratri: Indian Festivals 2024

When: This series of holy and popular festivals of India falls on the month of October, with Dussehra on 24th October. 

Where: Throughout the India 

Significance: It is held in honor of the divine feminine.

Things to do: The festival is of nine days and nine nights is accompanied by dance, music, sweets, and worship of the most powerful goddess. The festival ends with Dussehra (also called Vijayadashami) on the 10th day.

One popular ritual of this festival is Kanya Puja, which takes place on the eighth or ninth day. In this ritual, nine young girls are dressed as the nine goddesses portraying feminine power. They are worshiped with foot washing and are given offerings such as food and clothing.

Dussehra is a time to celebrate the triumphs of good over evil. It is associated with the victory of  Rama over the Ravana, from Ramayana. In North India, the Ram Lila is the highlight of the festival.

24. Diwali: Indian Festivals 2024

When: This popular festivals of India, falls on 12th November, Sunday in 2024.

Where: Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm.

Significance: The Diwali  celebration marks the return of Lord Ram to Ayodha after 14 years of exile.

Things to do: Traditionally it used to go on for five long days. The darkest night centers the Diwali night, the new moon night- the end of the month of Ashvin and the start of the month of Kartika.

When: In 2024, Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on 27th November, Monday.

Significance: It is commended to celebrate the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. 

Things to do: Festivities start in Gurudwaras two days before the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti. A 48-hour constant recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, called Akhand Path, is held. A day prior to Guru Nanak’s birthday, a parade called Nagarkirtan is coordinated. The parade is driven by five men, alluded to as the Panj Pyare, holding the Sikh three-sided flag, Nishan Sahib.
